Papaya

The papaya or pawpaw (Carica papaya) is a sweet fruit that can be eaten alone or mixed with other fruits in a fruit salad. Papayas are rich in the antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E along with the phytonutrients lycopene, zeaxanthin and lutein. Papayas also contain fiber and minerals. Papayas also contain the enzymes papain and chymopapain which are anti-inflammatory. The full flavor of papayas can be enjoyed in the ripe fruit when the skin turns yellow. After washing, the papaya can be cut in half to remove the seeds. The skin may be peeled and the orange flesh cubed or scooped out to mix with other fruit for a salad or enjoyed alone. Individuals allergic to latex may react to papaya, so consult with your health practitioner before adding papayas to your diet.
